Does bisexuality show up on gaydar?

Dear MG:

Does bisexuality show up on gaydar? After all, bisexuals are half gay!

Dear CuriousChick,
The subject of gaydar has become quite controversial in the pansexual community. There is no one reason why some people find this term objectionable just that everyone seems to have an opinion about it’s validity. Gaydar has become even more muddied by mainstream American culture’s embracing metrosexual hetero men and athletic/sporty hetro women. When I was but a young girl growing up in the backwoods of Mississippi if a girl liked to wear comfortable athletic clothing outside of gym class she was considered uninterested in making out with the boys behind the cafeteria after school. Ditto for the slightly effeminate boys who asked me for make up advice to cover their acne but who upon further investigation were definitely straight; one boy had octopus hands, I swear I couldn’t swat his hands away from my rear fast enough before another two were on it! I was reading a little side note in “Psychology Today” magazine http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20051018-000007.html that apparently preliminary studies have found that some gay men and women do in fact have an ability to quickly and efficiently identify other homosexuals through head shot photos and in one study sniffing underarms of subjects.

Bisexual woman in search of the same

Dear Miss Gloryous,

I am a bisexual woman and want to have a relationship with another woman but I’m having a hard time finding other women to date. Where have all the dateable women gone?

Sincerely,
Lonely & Frustrated in Mississippi

Dear Lonely,

Sorry to say the pansexual world seems to frown on sexuality tags, although that would probably make a fairly fun novelty pin series. Depending on the area you live in and the time and money you have to spend there are some fairly easy and low-cost/no-cost ways to meet people. Dance clubs and GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender) campus meetings are logical starting points. But places like your local zoo and public library have been known to have their fair share of patrons who have open minded ideas about sexuality, you just have to know how to gently flirt. Personally, I have even been known to strike up some great conversations (and a few dates) hanging out in the Self Help/How To section of a local book store while I was trying to find a good book on flirting. One time, two young ladies hit on me at the same time and all I did to initiate our impromptu discussion was a half smile and a tiny eyelash flutter. In short, practice the gentle art of flirting where ever you go and not just with people your want to date and you will be surprised how many bees become attracted to your honey.
